Fall 2015 Events

‌AIDS in China: An Activist's Perspective - Chinese Language Fellows and the department of East Asian studies hosted Dr. Yanhai Wan, a prominent leader in the global campaign against HIV/AIDS and director of the Beijing Aizhixing Institute, China's largest AIDS NGO, who shared his experiences on Oct 8.

Fall 2014 events

Japanese Ikebana artist Yuji Ueno In October: Japanese Ikebana- A traditional Japanese art flower arrangement event will be hosted by East Asian Studies with Yuji Ueno creating and presenting a remarkable floral design. Mr. Ueno (pictured at left) is an independent floral artist who has developed his own unique artistic sensibility and will be using common flowers, plants and foliage from the campus grounds. He has won national Ikebana competitions in Japan and is known in Japan as a "budding" flower artist. Please consult the Online Calendar of Events for information on this event.

Book talk by alumnus Joel Backaler '06, "China Goes West" - Joel visited the campus in Fall 2014 for two talks. His recently published book China Goes West was discussed on Chinese companies going global and why. The second session was a career talk on how someone can start an international business with a Connecticut College education. Joel was an economic major and an East Asian Studies minor at Connecticut College. 

Students teach Chinese in local school

Since the spring of 2010, the Chinese language program at Connecticut College has offered an opportunity for its students to teach Chinese language and culture to elementary school students at the Regional Multicultural Magnet School (RMMS) in downtown New London. Students are encouraged to take advantage of this great opportunity to increase awareness of Chinese language and culture in the local community and to improve their own language skills.

Japanese Language Teachers Conference

The 22nd Conference of the Japanese Language Teachers Association of New England and the Thirteenth Conference of the Northeast Council of Teachers of Japanese sponsored "Looking Past the Textbook: Teaching in the Visual Age."
