Martha Graham Dance Company opens exciting season of onStage at Connecticut College

NEW LONDON, Conn. - The Martha Graham Dance Company will open the 2009-10 season of onStage at Connecticut College in spectacular fashion. One of the oldest and most illustrious contemporary dance companies in the world, Martha Graham Dance will continue its storied history with Connecticut College at 8 p.m. on Oct. 3. The evening's program will include "Diversion of Angels," which premiered in Palmer Auditorium in 1948, when the college was home to the American Dance Festival.

onStage is also one of 100 theaters and arts organizations around the country presenting "The Laramie Project: Ten Years After - An Epilogue" on Oct. 12. The play examines the long-term impact of the murder of Matthew Shepard, a gay college student. Coinciding with the 11th anniversary of Shepard's death, the play will be presented in collaboration with Connecticut College's Department of Theater.

Other highlights of the onStage season include an Oct. 24 performance by Grammy Award-winning jazz vocalist Dianne Reeves, a Nov. 6 concert featuring the 16-member Vanguard Jazz Orchestra, the Calder Quartet on Nov. 13, Kinodance Company presenting "Denizen" on Feb. 5, The Acting Company's "Romeo and Juliet" Feb. 10 and the all-male a cappella ensemble Cantus April 9.

"This is one of the most exciting onStage seasons to date," Robert Richter, director of arts programming at Connecticut College, said. "We have a little bit of everything - inspiring dance, heart-wrenching theater, smooth jazz and powerful music. The arts are alive and well at Connecticut College."
