Centennial momentum builds

Just as the weather begins to cool, Connecticut College's Centennial celebration is red hot. With exciting events planned for the fall, the College continues to highlight its history, recognize successful alumni and showcase the academic achievements of a century. September kicks off with the Centennial Convocation on Sept. 6. Convocation celebrates the official start of the academic year, and new students will be warmly welcomed by faculty, staff, fellow students and alumni representatives at this important ceremony. It begins at 4 p.m. in Palmer Auditorium and will be followed by a picnic on Tempel Green. On Sept. 9 and 10, the onStage at Connecticut College series will open the year with Mary Foster Conklin '79, whose cabaret performance will include selections from the Great American Songbook.

On Sept. 16, Jay Lauf '86, publisher of The Atlantic, will be featured as part of the Centennial-inspired lecture series, "Great Beginnings: Conversations with Alumni." And later in the month, alumni and parents can compete at Connecticut College trivia events to be held in Philadelphia, New York and Boston. In October, Fall Weekend provides a wealth of opportunities to celebrate the Centennial. Guests are invited to see Connecticut College like never before at the culminating Centennial event, "100 Years of Great Beginnings." This 'Big Event' is Saturday, Oct. 22 at 10 a.m. in Palmer Auditorium. Other special events planned for the weekend include: a celebration of the new Science Center under construction at New London Hall; an alumni post-game party after the men's soccer team takes on the Coast Guard Academy on Tempel Green; an onStage performance by the Mingus Big Band; a talk by Margaret Sheridan '67, the Martha Bennett '73 Professor Emeritus of Human Development, and Sara Radlinski, former director of the Connecticut College Children's Program; and Friday evening fireworks. November events include an onStage presentation of "The Rivalry" - a dramatization of the historic Lincoln-Douglas debates - on Nov. 4, and "Counting Down the Years," a presentation of exhibits and events through which the Department of Math will highlight the history of math at the College, Nov. 18-19.

The Centennial year wraps up in December with another presentation of "Great Beginnings: Conversations with Alumni" on Dec. 1 (speaker to be announced) and various Centennial holiday parties that will help the community celebrate the end of one century and the Great Beginning of the next. The schedule for those events will be announced soon.
