Students to present results of New London projects

On May 6, students in the Certificate Program in Connecticut College's Holleran Center for Community Action and Public Policy will present the projects they undertook in New London as part of a course in Public Policy and Social Ethics. The course couples critical inquiry with social action and is organized around three areas of public policy - education, healthcare and housing and homelessness. Students put what they learn to use, working with community-based organizations in order to get a better understanding of how they operate, acquire active citizenship skills and contribute to advancing the community.

The three partnership projects they worked on this year were:

The Covenant Shelter of New London's Elizabeth Durante '10 Children's Program
The primary goal of the Covenant Shelter's youth program is to provide academic support and social and emotional learning to youth of all ages staying at the shelter. Students in this group organized and implemented the after-school curriculum, including field trips.

The Haitian Health Foundation
The goal of this project was to share the story of the thousands of families in need of services from the Haitian Health Foundation (HHF) and to raise funds to support these services. Students in this group advocated for the HHF and its mission by creating and updating HHF publications, educational materials and online and print marketing materials. They also planned and implemented several educational and fundraising activities.

The New London Homeless Hospitality Center - 4th Annual Walk for the Homeless
The students in this group planned the 4th Annual Walk for the Homeless, which is designed to raise awareness about the issue of homelessness in our community and raise funds for the Homeless Hospitality Center. The students were responsible for the majority of the planning work for the event, including researching other fundraising walks, recruiting corporate sponsors and walkers, managing publicity for the event, organizing volunteers and designing publicity materials. In addition to planning the walk, the students also volunteer at the shelter.

The presentations are Friday, May 6, at 11:30 a.m. in Room 201 of Blaustein Humanities Center. The event is free and open to the public.
