In an op-ed in today’s Hartford Courant, Connecticut College President Leo I. Higdon Jr. writes that colleges and universities need to do more to train teachers to be leaders in their classrooms, school districts and communities.

“We need to ensure that teachers understand their roles as leaders and have the education and the tools to effectively carry out that role,” Higdon writes.

To better prepare future teachers, Higdon argues that colleges and universities should integrate leadership into the curriculum, encourage students to take advantage of leadership opportunities in co-curricular programs and bring expert teachers who are role models into education programs.
