General Education and AP/IB Policy

AP credit or the equivalent may be used to satisfy General Education requirements for students who entered prior to Fall 2016, subject to the approval of the department. Please refer to the AP Test information below to determine the potential General Education equivalency. The minimum AP score required for Connecticut College credit is a 4.

  • Art (Studio) - Area 5
  • Art History - Area 7
  • Biology - Area 1
  • Calculus (AB or BC) - Area 2
  • Chemistry - Area 1
  • Chinese Language - Does not satisfy General Education
  • Computer Science A - Area 2
  • Economics (Micro or Macro) - Area 3
  • English Language/Composition - Does not satisfy General Education
  • English Literature/Composition - Area 4 with a score of 5
  • Environmental Science - Does not satisfy General Education; Equivalent to ES 110
  • European History - Area 7
  • French Language - Satisfies General Education Foreign Language requirement with a score of 5
  • German Language - Satisfies General Education Foreign Language requirement with a score of 5
  • Government & Politics (Comparative or U.S.) - Area 3
  • Human Geography - Does not satisfy General Education
  • Italian Language - Check with department regarding General Education Foreign Language requirement
  • Japanese Language - Does not satisfy General Education
  • Latin - Check with department regarding General Education Foreign Language requirement
  • Music Theory - Area 5
  • Physics (B or C) - Does not satisfy General Education for students who matriculated prior to fall 2014; Will satisfy Area 1 for students who matriculate in or after fall 2014
  • Psychology - Satisfies Area 3 for students who matriculated in or prior to fall 2014; Will not satisfy General Education for students who matriculate in or after fall 2015 - can only be used for PSY 100 exemption
  • Spanish (Language or Literature) - Satisfies General Education Foreign Language requirement with Spanish Language AP only
  • Statistics - Area 2
  • United States History - Area 7 for students pursuing Teacher Certification
  • World History - Area 7
