Faculty
Will staff be on campus this fall to support the faculty?
Some staff will work on campus part or all of the time, while others will work fully remotely. Because our staff represent so many different types of work situations and responsibilities, a rubric centered on three key questions, has been used to determine staffs’ work location:
- Can the staff member successfully fulfill their essential job functions remotely?
- Does the staff member’s job functions entail direct interactions with current or prospective students and/or faculty?
- Will the experience of our current or prospective students be improved by having the staff member on campus?
What steps is the College taking to keep our community healthy and safe?
The College is following federal, state and local public health guidance and is taking numerous steps to keep everyone healthy, including:
- Reducing the number of people on campus by having some staff work fully remotely, and having some who are designated to work on campus work staggered shifts or work a scheduled mix of on campus and remote.
- Installing Plexiglas barriers in selected locations across campus with frequent in-person interactions.
- Following CDC-recommended cleaning protocols.
- Reducing and distancing indoor and outdoor seating in spaces throughout campus.
- Limiting the size of in-person gatherings based on guidance provided by the State of Connecticut for both indoor and outdoor activities.
- Regularly testing all students, faculty and staff who live, learn and work on campus to campus beginning Aug. 17 and continuing throughout the fall semester.
What should faculty do if someone is not complying with the College’s health and safety guidelines?
If you witness someone failing to comply with the College’s health and safety protocols and procedures while on campus, please remind them of the College’s expectations. If the person fails to comply with your reminder or repeatedly is not complying with the College's expectations, you should promptly submitted on an incident report in CamelWeb, or if the person is a student, you can report the incident to the Office of Student Life and if the person is an employee, you can report the incident to the employee’s supervisor, Human Resources Office or the Director of Environmental Health and Safety.
How will the College enforce its health and safety guidelines?
The College goal is to ensure campus community members comply with the College's safety protocols, and will correct any non-compliance. This included the College’s face mask, physical distancing, and COVID testing. Students who fail to comply will be addressed by the appropriate dean and corrective action will be taken based on the severity of the problem and number of occurrences. If an employee fails to follow the expectations after being counseled, further progressive corrective action will be taken, and the action will depend on the severity of the problem and the number of occurrences.
How often will faculty who teach on campus be tested for COVID-19?
Faculty members who are present on campus three or more days per week will be tested twice a week, while those who are present one to two days a week will be tested once a week.
Can I come to campus if I am not scheduled to teach in person classes?
In an effort to keep the on campus community healthy, only students, faculty and staff who are participating in weekly COVID-19 testing should come to campus. If you are not and have a need to visit campus, please contact Director of Environmental Health and Safety Steve Langlois. The College will consider limited exceptions, and they must be scheduled, brief and contained to one location.
Can I come to campus if I am not scheduled to teach in person classes?
Faculty and staff who are not participating in the College’s testing program are not allowed on campus without pre-registering their visit by submitting a Campus Access Request form. This form requires (1) the date and approximate time of the visit, (2) the building(s) being accessed, (3) the estimated duration of the visit and (4) the reason for the visit. Access to campus will be limited to the main College entrance, and a Connecticut College identification (Camel Card) must be presented upon arrival at the Gatehouse. All College safety protocols must be followed while on campus. This includes wearing a face mask at all times and maintaining a social distance from others. Visits should be infrequent, brief and involve minimal contact with others.
What should a faculty member do if they develop symptoms for COVID-19?
If you do not feel well, please stay home, contact your healthcare provider right away to discuss your symptoms and follow their guidance. If your healthcare provider diagnoses you with COVID-19 or you receive a positive COVID-19 test, please notify Steve Langlois, Director of Environmental Health & Safety, at 860-439-2252. If people in your house don’t feel well, please stay home. This will help keep our campus community safe and healthy. Also, don’t forget to communicate with your chair and students; this may be the time to put into motion the contingency plan that you have developed for your classes. Please be sure to follow health officials’ guidance regarding quarantine, isolation and when it is safe to return to work.
What should a faculty member do if they or their household member is diagnosed with COVID-19?
If you or a member of your household is diagnosed with COVID-19 or a public health official tells you to quarantine, please contact Steve Langlois, Director of Environmental Health and Safety, within 24 hours. You should follow health officials' guidance regarding quarantine, isolation and when it is safe to return to work.
If a student tests positive for COVID-19 and has been in a class, who gets notified?
When a student tests positive, the College’s contact tracers will begin their work immediately to identify and notify high risk contacts that have been exposed and will need to quarantine. Class deans will be notified and will contact faculty should accommodations to academic work be needed while a student is recuperating or in quarantine.
Classrooms are being set up to mitigate exposure and transmission, as such, universal masking, physical distancing and protocols should be followed. Gating conditions for students, as well as faculty and staff, will be managed through daily symptoms tracking in the CoVerified application and only those with "Clear" rating may move about campus. Faculty should ask every student upon arrival to class to show their daily clearance status on the CoVerified app, so that they know who is allowed to be in the classroom.
If a student is quarantined and can’t come to in-person classes, will faculty be notified so they may record classes for the student?
Class deans will be notified and will contact faculty should accommodations to academic work be needed while a student is recuperating or in quarantine.
How will the College ensure that students continue their education in the event their instructor becomes ill?
The office of the Dean of the Faculty will work with affected departments to ensure the continuity of the educational experience.
How will classrooms and offices be cleaned?
The College will follow state and CDC guidelines for cleaning and disinfecting all areas including offices, bathrooms, corridors and public areas. Sanitizing products will be available in every classroom, bathroom, computer labs and shared space, along with instructions.
Does Connecticut’s travel advisory impact faculty?
Connecticut’s travel advisory does not affect individuals who live in surrounding states and work in Connecticut or vice versa, unless they intend to cross state borders for more than 24 hours, and it does not affect essential workers. Additionally, this advisory does not impact any individual who intends to cross the state border for less than 24 hours.
This travel advisory only applies to those individuals who plan to spend more than 24 hours in one of the listed states, as they will then be required to self-quarantine for 14 days under threat of a fine. For more information, visit the State of Connecticut’s website.
Do faculty need to register their travel?
No, but faculty will need to inform their supervisor or department chair as to their travel plans as they would under normal circumstances. The College strongly discourages personal travel to locations with a COVID-19 CDC Level 2 or 3 travel alert or that are on the CT Travel Advisory list. If you do travel to one of these locations, you are expected to follow federal (CDC), state and College guidelines upon your return. The College requires you to self-quarantine for 14 days upon your return, submit a Quarantine Registration Form, and notify your supervisor or department chair if your quarantine will impact your work. If you are able to fulfill your job responsibilities remotely, you are expected to continue working during your quarantine. If you visited a Travel Advisory State for more than 24 hours, you must also fill out a CT Travel Health Form upon arrival in Connecticut. CT and CDC travel advisories change frequently, so we encourage you to check them often before, during and following any travel.
