For over 30 years, Flock Theatre has been delighting summer audiences with Shakespeare in the Arboretum!

Since 1994, the New London-based Flock Theatre has presented "Shakespeare in the Arboretum" during July and August. People, picnics and blankets cover the amphitheater's grassy slopes and the Arboretum pond makes a perfect backdrop for enjoying these marvelous productions.

Flock Theatre usually presents two productions in the Arboretum. You can also follow Flock Theatre on Facebook.

All shows start at 7 p.m. - tickets at the gates. General admission. No seating provided, blankets and chairs encouraged. Picnics welcome.

Derron Wood '86, principal director of Flock Theatre, has directed "Macbeth," "Much Ado About Nothing," "The Tempest," "Oedipus Rex," "Romeo & Juliet" and "Agamemnon," among others.

2025 Performances:

Poster for Flock Theatre's performance of William Shakespeare's Much Ado About Nothing
Much Ado About Nothing
by William Shakespeare
Directed by Victor Chiburis

Shakespeare’s romantic comedy of rumors, gossip, and eavesdropping (i.e. “Noting”) centers around the misunderstandings and preconceived notions that befall us in both hopeless romance and cynical pride. Witty, charming, and an all-around good-time, this summer-y play is the perfect reminder of our playful hearts and how delightful love can be, even when it’s messy.

Rhinoceros
by Eugene Ionesco
Directed by Derron Wood

A small French town in the mid-century is beset by the people turning into rhinos, one-by-one. A post-war absurdist play on the rise of facism that is both hilarious and terrifying, keenly apt for our day and age. Flock’s production will feature street-theatre style puppetry with puppet design by Heather Asch, a multi-Emmy winning puppet designer/puppeteer whose work includes the Muppets, Sesame Street, and Bear in the Big Blue House. Heather also designed the puppets for Flock’s Animal Farm in 2019.
