Isaac Gottesman is a historian of education interested in the role of education in paths towards a more just society. His scholarly and teaching interests thus straddle the historical and the contemporary.

He is the author of The Critical Turn in Education: From Marxist Critique to Poststructuralist Feminism to Critical Theories of Race, published in 2016 in Michael Apple’s series in Critical Social Thought with Routledge. The book, which offers a history of the emergence of critical scholarship in the field of education, was named a Critics’ Choice Award Winner in 2017 by the American Educational Studies Association.

Gottesman’s work has been published in a range of scholarly journals, including, Educational Studies, Curriculum Inquiry, History of Education Quarterly, and Teaching and Teacher Education.

Born and raised in Eugene, Oregon, Gottesman’s parents were public school teachers originally from New York City. After completing his Ph.D. in Social and Cultural Foundations of Education at the University of Washington in Seattle, Gottesman was a professor in the School of Education at Iowa State University in Ames where he spent three years as Division Head of Teaching, Learning, Leadership, and Policy. In 2019, he moved to Connecticut as Chair of the Department of Education at University of Saint Joseph in West Hartford and served two years as Vice President of the Connecticut chapter of the American Association of Colleges of Teacher Education (AACTE-CT). He joined the faculty of Connecticut College as the Chair of the Department of Education in July 2022.
