Tom Gately '91 took home a special effects award and an Oscar nomination for Pixar's "Day & Night," a short animated feature that audiences saw before Toy Story 3 last year.

Gately, an art major, was the supervising animator for the film. The team won an award from the Visual Effects Society on Feb. 1 for Outstanding Achievement in an Animated Short.

"Day & Night" tells the story of two dissimilar characters -- night and day -- who become friends when they start to appreciate what makes each unique. The six-minute short highlights the visual effects for which Pixar is known.

Gately's team lost the Oscar to "The Lost Thing," a Passion Pictures Australia Production. The Academy tends to favor small studios for the 'best short' category and since Pixar won the Oscar for Toy Story 3, there was a slim chance "Day & Night" would also win.

Gately joined Pixar in 2004 after 11 years with Disney. His work has included "The Lion King," "Cars" and "Toy Story 3."
