Professor awarded Ford Foundation Fellowship

Professor of Education Sandy Grande has been awarded a 2019 Ford Foundation Senior Fellowship. Grande, who is also the director of Conn’s Center for the Critical Study of Race and Ethnicity, will use the fellowship to complete her book manuscript, tentatively titled, Indigenous Elders and the Decolonial Elsewhere of Aging.

Grande’s scholarship has “worked across the disciplines of Native American and Indigenous Studies and Education to develop critical analyses of the colonial present.” Her new line of research will extend this work, “presupposing that there is something to be learned, politically and pedagogically, about the colonial present through the study of global aging.”

The senior fellowship is open to individuals who have previously held a Ford Foundation Predoctoral, Dissertation, or Postdoctoral Fellowship, which Grande was awarded in 2000.

The Ford Foundation Fellowship Programs have been administered by the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine since 1979 and the Ford Foundation has invested in fellowships as far back as the early 1960s. These fellowship awards have made substantial contributions in bringing excellence and diversity to the academic community by supporting the career development of almost 5,000 outstanding scholars.
