Los Angeles Times profiles Beyond Meat CEO Ethan Brown ’94

“Ethan Brown went vegan but missed fast food. So he started a revolution,” reads the Los Angeles Times headline.

That’s right: a fast food revolution. And one that just might help save the planet, at that.

Brown, who majored in history and government at Conn, is the founder and CEO of Beyond Meat. The company’s mission is to “create delicious plant-based burgers, sausage, crumbles and more—made directly from simple plant-based ingredients. By shifting from animal, to plant-based meat, we are creating one savory solution that solves four growing issues attributed to livestock production: human health, climate change, constraints on natural resources and animal welfare.”

Twitter co-founder Biz Stone told the LA Times that when he met Brown, “It was immediately apparent that he was massively ambitious. … This was a guy who from the beginning was saying, ‘We are going to be in McDonald’s.’”

This fall, McDonald’s announced it had chosen Beyond to be its supplier for a plant-based burger test in Canada, and Dunkin’ Donuts decided to go national with a Beyond breakfast patty earlier than expected.

“Our ambition is to literally be in every major continent changing the way people eat,” Brown told the LA Times.
